“The fragrance of the oils filled the house.” (John 12:3 MSG)
I like to use plug-in air fresheners around my home. With poetic names like Sunset Fields, Bahama Breeze, Autumn Gathering, and Winter Glow, there is a fragrance for every season. Unless these vials of oil are plugged into electric sockets, their scents remain dormant, but once attached to their base, the aroma can fill an entire room for weeks.
All of us are like vials of scented oil. The Spirit within remains dormant until we are plugged into the Source of All Power. The essence of who we are can only be expressed when we remain connected to God. When we abide in Christ, when the fragrance of the Holy Spirit permeates our surroundings, others are inspired to plug into God as well.
"If you want to get warm you must stand near the fire: if you want to be wet you must get into the water. If you want joy, power, peace, eternal life, you must get close to, or even into, the thing that has them.” (C.S. Lewis)
